Honeywell chooses Tofino firewall for OneWireless system
Tofino security device will sit between the OneWireless networks and Experion PKS to block harmful traffic. Hirschmann also partnering with Byres for security devices.
Honeywell Process Solutionshas selected Tofino firewall technology fromByres Security Inc. to provide a critical level of protection between OneWireless networks and Experion PKS (Process Knowledge System). The device will provide a critical layer of protection against unwanted and harmful network traffic, thereby promoting control system integrity. The product is available today from Honeywell.

Byres says the selection by Honeywell centers on ease of use. Unlike IT-style firewalls that require highly-trained staff for installation, the OneWireless firewall automatically works as soon as it is connected to the network. The product filters bi-directional network traffic, allowing only wireless I/O on both directions, while blocking other data types.
"Honeywell is taking a holistic view of security by protecting both its OneWireless networks and wired communications, such as Experion control networks, with multiple layers of protection," says Eric Byres, CTO of Byres Security Inc. "The Tofino technology in the OneWireless firewall provides an easy way for Honeywell’s customers to achieve in-depth security with a simple zero-configuration module."
In related news, Hirschmann (division of Belden) and Byres have signed a technology cooperation agreement to launch new products jointly in the area of industrial network security, with availability later this year.
