New project: Power plant in Germany will be among world’s most efficient

Datteln Unit 4, a new power plant under construction in Germany’s Rhein-Ruhr region, will be one of the most fuel-efficient coal-fired plants in the world, says ownerE.ON-Kraftwerke GmbH. The 1,100 MW facility will be equipped with control systems and instrumentation provided byABBas part of an order worth more than $62 million from the German utility. Unit 4 is expected to begin operation in 2011 and will replace the less efficient units at the site.

The hard-coal-fired facility boasts thermal efficiency over 45%, putting it near numbers normally only available with more costly combined cycle gas turbine units. ABB will equip Unit 4 with a state-of-the-art power plant control system, demonstrating the utility’s trust in ABB’s control technology and expertise, says Peter Leupp, head of ABB’s power systems division. “Our integrated systems combine the latest ABB platform with our extensive knowledge of power plant processes, resulting in very reliable operation, as well as reduced maintenance and operational costs,” he adds.

ABB’s scope of supply comprises a System 800xA control installation with boiler protection and all instrumentation. This includes electrical actuators, which will be integrated into the process control system via a Profibus network. ABB will also carry out the complete engineering, installation and commissioning. The order includes the option to deliver process control equipment for three similar power plants in the future.

Since the product was launched three years ago, ABB reports it has supplied more than 2,500 System 800xA control installations for a variety of industries, including power generation.
