AS-Interface network I/O nodes help high-speed communication

By Control Engineering Staff March 15, 2007

Twinsburg, OH—New combined transaction functionality in the VBA family of I/O modules from Pepperl+Fuchs allows transmission of fast analog signals and dedicated high-speed communications profile updates of analog data at the full speed of the network, using AS-Interface specification 3.0. Among other benefits, it is now possible to define a “configuration channel” between I/O devices and the gateway, allowing complex devices to be configured and used easily on AS-Interface. The network often is used inside machines or in the field to connect binary sensors and actuators to higher control-level communications. The product family is CE marked and UL listed and supports extended addressing with 4 inputs and 4 outputs for up to 62 nodes per network.

The G2 node provides IP67 protection in a low profile flat housing, with an M12 quick-disconnect I/O connection method, said to make it ideal for applications in the field. It includes an integrated addressing jack, with inputs for mechanical contacts or 2-, 3-, and 4-wire sensors. Electronic outputs can be collectively loaded with 24 V dc and 0.5 A per output. An LED on the top of the module indicates the current switching status for each channel. Similarly, an LED is provided to monitor AS-Interface communication. LEDs also indicate AS-Interface voltage and external power supply.

The IP65-protected G4 node features input wires that can be cut to length in the field with vibration-resistant cage tension spring terminals for I/O connection, suitable for harsh field conditions. Mechanical contacts and 2-wire and 3-wire sensors can be connected to the inputs, with sensors supplied from the module. The electronic outputs can be loaded to a maximum of 24 V dc and 1 A per output at 24 V dc. An LED indicates the current switching status for each channel. Communication monitoring is integrated in the module; in the event of faults on the bus, the monitoring system switches off current to the outputs.

The KE switch cabinet module is IP20 protected, with a 22.5-mm housing for minimal enclosure space requirements. The module is said to install quickly and easily by snapping on the 35 mm DIN rail. It includes keyed, removable, color-coded terminals for all electrical connections. To avoid incorrect electrical connection exchanges, input and output terminals are mechanically coded. Power to inputs and the connected sensors can be supplied via the modules’ internal AS-Interface supply or via an external voltage source. Switching is carried out by means of a switch positioned at the side of the module.

Pepperl+Fuchs designs, manufactures, and applies high quality factory and process automation products and services, beginning with development of proximity sensors 45 years ago, the company says.
