Vibration monitoring switch can prevent machine failure

The ifm efector VK Series vibration switch continuously monitors critical plant equipment vibration levels to help prevent machine failure and expensive downtime. Every operating machine in a plant has a unique vibration level that can change when it experiences unusual operating conditions; a change can indicate pending failure. Ifm efector (Exton, PA) announces its new VK Series vibration switch, which continuously monitors critical plant equipment vibration levels to help prevent machine failure and expensive downtime. Every operating machine in a plant has its own unique vibration level that can change when it experiences unusual operating conditions. These changes can indicate potential machine damage or failure.

The compact VK switch is designed to permanently mount on a machine. The switch provides an adjustable switching output and a 4-20 mA analog output proportional to the current vibration level, all-in-one package. By detecting vibration changes when they first occur, the VK switch can prevent equipment from catastrophically failing, reduce secondary damage, and eliminate expensive down time.

The VK vibration switch eliminates the challenges of traditional vibration monitoring such as spectrum analysis and expensive data collectors. Implementation is based on the ISO10816 standard, which defines vibration monitoring of machinery. Based on this standard, the VK monitors the frequency range of 10– 1,000 Hz and is adjustable for the maximum allowable vibration in the unit of RMS velocity. The ISO standard makes it easy to implement vibration monitoring without complex methods or equipment, the company says.

Setup is quick using two setup dials that rotate to adjust the maximum RMS velocity setpoint and response delay time. The switch provides an alarm if the setpoint is exceeded. Highly-visible LEDs provide local indication for power and alarm.

List price for the VK switch is $198.00 (US). According to ifm, in only 5 minutes, a vibration monitoring system can be installed and ready for operation.
