Siemens process control system part of power station modernization project

Siemens Power Generation will install new instrumentation and controls and protection equipment in three units at an Irish power station. Modernization at Moneypoint station, owned by the Irish utility Electricity Supply Board, will take place in phases over the next four years. When completed, the project will double the service life of the 20-yr-old plant. The contract is valued at more than EUR 20 million; the Teleperm XP process control system will allow the plant to respond with more flexibility to the demands of a deregulated market.

Moneypoint, located on the River Shannon in County Clare, is a coal-fired facility with a capacity of 900 MW. Because it meets nearly 25% of Ireland’s power demand, two of the three units must stay on line at all times during the conversion. The phased approach will help keep downtimes short and maintain flexibility. During the transition, the old and new instrumentation and controls systems will operate in parallel, reducing risks during the expected 8-week outage.
