Natick, Mass.-Because digital buses and networks are highly prized methods of reducing control system wiring, a recent study projected increases in shipments of distributed/remote I/O products that interface via Ethernet and Foundation fieldbus. These products are used with distributed control systems (DCSs), PC-based control systems, and programmable logic control systems.
The study, ‘Global Markets and User Needs for Industrial Distributed/Remote I/O,’ found that many of today’s buses and networks will continue to be used. However, it adds much more marketshare will be concentrated in fewer buses and networks and new market leaders will emerge. For instance, the study discovered, through 2003, the largest worldwide share of distributed/remote I/O device shipments will continue to use Profibus DP. However, it also found distributed/ remote I/O device products with 10 Mbps Ethernet will rival Profibus DP for market lead by 2003 and even account for the largest share of shipments to DCS applications.
