Phoenix AZ, Milwaukee, WI and Zurich, Switzerland —Several major automation-related contracts were announced in the Middle East and China by ABB , Honeywell , and Johnson Controls .

Honeywell is supplying its Experion Process, Machine and Drives (PMD) DaVinci quality control system and ProFlow and AquaTrol cross-direction control system to China’s Nine Dragons Paper Ltd, one of the world’s largest containerboard manufacturers. The Chinese company is expanding operations to increase capacity from 5.35 million to 10.15 million tons per year by 2009. The Honeywell products will control paper machines in the newest mill at Chongqing, and will also provide new machines at existing mills in Dongguan and Taicang. Nine Dragons produces high quality packaging paperboard products that include linerboard used in making corrugated cartons.

Experion unifies operations by integrating subsystems throughout a plant to improve production quality and will keep processes running at optimum levels. It can control systems such as paper production lines from a single operator station. It will include more than 27,000 input / output points across all three mills. Ten DaVinci 4000 scanners will precisely measure paper quality using a suite of online sensors. The system provides data, process information, historical trending, and statistical analysis.

According to Andrew Hird, Asia-Pacific director for pulp and paper, Honeywell Process Solutions, “It is not enough to simply make more of a product– manufacturers must ensure quality doesn’t fall as production volume rises.”

In other news, Johnson Controls , in the largest single order for chiller units in the company’s history, will install 46 units on the island of Pearl-Qatar for Qatar Cool, which is launching the world’s largest district cooling chiller plant. Each of the 46 York centrifugal water-cooled, 25-ton chiller units measures 26 x 11 x 14 ft. The customer has the option to purchase six more units.

Units will be shipped from San Antonio for installation in the plant which will supply 130,000 tons of chilled water daily to cool more than 15,000 residential and commercial units that serve 40,000 Pearl-Qatar residents. The man-made island covers 985 acres of reclaimed land offshore from the Arabian Peninsula state of Qatar, the Arab world’s wealthiest per capita country.

Johnson Controls regional manager Ray Ring said, “The plant into which these units will be installed will not be duplicated and is certain to become a global landmark.” He notes that a number of factors contributed to the selection of Johnson Controls for the project, among them:

Environmental sensitivity. The energy-efficient chillers use environmentally friendly and non-ozone-depleting HFC-134a refrigerant to comply with Qatar’s recently enacted law to control, reduce, and phase out its import of ozone-depleting substances.

Durability in harsh conditions. Chillers will operate at extreme conditions, where entering condenser water temperatures can reach up to 97

Reduced operating costs. The chillers require half the electrical switch gear normally needed in a plant of this type. The manufacturer is also installing its Metasys building automation system to ensure the plant operates at maximum efficiency.

Chilled water will be distributed through an underground network of 10-foot-tall pipes laid out across the island. Delivery and installation is expected to begin in December and continue through May 2008.

Qatar is also the site of the world’s largest aluminum plant, which will be built in one phase. ABB has received a $140-million contract from the partners constructing the facility, Qatalum, a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum and Norway’s Hydro Aluminum.

ABB will supply a high-voltage power rectifier station comprising 10 high-current rectifiers rated at 1,750 V, 10 regulating and rectifier transformers, System 800xA control and protection systems, two SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) systems, two direct-current measuring systems, and various auxiliary systems. ABB will provide high-voltage cabling, engineering, training, installation, and commissioning.

The greenfield project will include an aluminum smelter with a capacity of 585,000 tons per year, and a dedicated 1,350 MW power plant station to ensure a stable supply of electricity. The smelter will be located in Mesaieed Industrial City 40 kilometers south of Qatar capital Doha, near a natural bay on the southern coast of the Qatar Eastern Peninsula.
