Jointly developed 8-port switch development board enables rapid implementation of IEEE 1588 timing control standard across a range of applications demanding sub-microsecond accuracy. The board, said to provide key features essential to end products, combines devices and intellectual property from Altera Corp., National Semiconductor Corp., and Germany-based design and IP provider MorethanIP (MTIP). Board’s accuracy level is said to be critical for meeting strict communications latency and quality-of-service requirements in the industrial connectivity market. Applications include switches employing industrial standards such as Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Ethernet Powerlink, and other Ethernet protocols. Reference board includes 10/100-Mbps Ethernet media access controllers compliant with IEEE 802-3 and supports IEEE 1588 versions 1 and 2 for timing control with transparent end-to-end and peer-to-peer clock sequencing.
